We wish we could just tuck that into a locker and commence with the teaching and learning.
Unfortunately that is not how it works.
We are rarely trained or equipped to deal with even the basic social and emotional stuff, and then a little trauma and broken relationships and poverty show up, and even the best teacher can feel overwhelmed.
The brave teachers also know that learning the curriculum only happens in tandem with the social and emotional learning, and so we carve out time from nothing and we teach life skills from our hearts. We teach manners and polite conversation. We teach interdependent community and social problem solving. We use story telling to combat stealing and meanness and puppets help us to find our voice. We teach that kindness is our secret weapon and we spread it around. Every single day we model as best we can the behaviors we want in our students. And we hope and pray at least a sprinkling of it will stick.
