That is the story of life, or it's the one we have been conditioned to accept. It doesn't have to be that way! This is really good news for a person like me.
It is a conscious and intentional choice to slow down, to get present in our own lives, to notice and see and observe. Just like any change in life it takes effort and practice.
This year I have been in the midst of changing so much. It is crazy how difficult it is to break old habits, patterns, and ways of thinking. We all have a setting of auto pilot. It just looks different in different people. My automatic setting is different in daily life than it is in highly stressful settings. Just noticing these things has required my slowing down enough to see and observe. I feel like I'm peeling layers away in my mind and heart.
If you're ready to try it out, here are some tips:
- Be gentle with yourself. This is a process. You are learning. There is no perfection.
- Start by seeing and observing in the natural world. Do you see signs of spring around where you live?
- Walk in your neighborhood or in the woods. Notice colors and textures.
- After walking or at the end of the day sit still, close your eyes, and just be for a few minutes. Gently let yourself review your observations. Does anything stand out? Take notice!
