True To Self

Something to write or think about today:

What does "To thine own self be true," mean to you?

To me those words are becoming so freeing, and they are leading me into more honesty and integrity.  I'm really trying to set up choices that resonate with me.  The big choices and the little everyday ones, too.

One change for me is my ability to at least identify that something is not feeling right or sitting well with me.  Most of the time I can identify someway in which that situation is not consistent with who I am/want to be or what my belief system is or what my goals for the future are.

This is just a bit of how this is working out in my life.

I would love to hear your thoughts!  Share a comment!

Elements of Sustainability

I've been talking about sustainability here.  I have found some great elements that support sustainable people.  I'm going to write about them right here over the next couple weeks.

The first powerful element is:
To thine own self be true.

The gift of this element is that of authenticity.

I'm struck by how much of my personal suffering is directly related to trying to be someone else or meet someone else's expectations of me or trying to fit in where I don't belong.  Life is way too short for that!

Please share the gift of you with the rest of us.  We really do want to enjoy your unique eccentricities!

In the spirit of this element, I am working and painting

today from 11 - 5, at
Miss Mercedes in Marblehead
413 Main Street, Marblehead, Ohio

A brave blessing just for you today:

May you find that your summer is filled with
unexpected delights. . .
May the rain bring more beautiful flowers,
May the sun bring glowing vitality,
May you find every day filled with surprising growth.

Happy Summer!

Sustainability Quotes

I just adore the writing of Rumi.  I find so much it what he says that affirms my sustainability. Here's hoping you find some courage and sustainability in these little gems:

“When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.”

“Don't be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth.”

And here are a couple questions to write or think about today based on these quotes:

~What do you do that brings you that joy?
~What is one step you can take today to unfold your own myth?

Sending you courage and strength from the bottom of my heart!

Sustainable You

I've been thinking for months now about what it means to be sustainable in the teaching profession.  How does one thrive with courage and strength and excellence, despite the chaos and dysfunction around us?  Thoughts and ideas and feelings have been tumbling around.  I've been making many discoveries about myself and teaching as I explore this realm.  I'm going to share some ideas and practices with you this summer that might just help you soar and sustain you as a teacher.

But I want to know what you think.  What makes you sustainable as a teacher?  What forces inside you support you?  What forces around you support you and sustain you?  What do you need right now to make you a sustainable resource for our world?

Please bravely comment and share your thoughts.  I can't wait to hear what you have to say!

{These couple of definitions below from Merriam Webster might help.}

Live the life

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.
{Henry David Thoreau}

I'm easing my way into life at Lakeside.  It's hard to slow down and switch gears.  I worked my little summer job for the first time on Friday evening, and a customer had the most amazing ring.  On the outside it said "Live the life. . ." and inside the ring it said, "you have imagined."  I've been thinking about that and wondering what it really means.  I don't believe it is the fantastical life, but I do believe it is intentional and authentic, and a better version of myself than I have ever dared to imagine.

What does "Live the life you have imagined," mean for you?

Where have you been?

Lots of people have wondered where Brave Teacher Mim has been.  I've been much quieter here than I intended.  A year ago I visioned a very different place from where I have ended up.  I've been employing loads of courage, and so much good stuff has been coming my way!

I've been studying for a 200 level yoga teacher certification.  I will be official in less than a week!  It has been a powerful and amazing journey.

I've been a total painting fool.  This spring I've dug into acrylics in a very liberated way!  You can see some here on the page called Brave Art Gallery.  {I've had 2 pieces in juried shows this spring!  Talk about courage!}

I continue to hone my craft as a 4th grade teacher.  {This could be many, many future posts!}

I'm still a very messy and at times overwhelmed mom to Sam.  Sam and I are leaving next week to spend the entire summer in Lakeside, Ohio.  I've dreamed of taking a child there for the summer, even before I had a child.  I feel so fortunate to have so many people surrounding us with love to make this happen.

All of these experiences are influencing the path of Brave Teachers.  I'm beginning to plan the 3rd Annual Brave Teacher Fall Retreat.  {More coming soon on this one!}

I'm digging deeper into my own life and experience in order to find those little gems to share with you.  It's taking more time than I anticipated, but I think you will agree with me that it has been worth the wait.

Urgent vs. Important

6/2/2013

Something to write or think about today:

Which one is winning out today--the urgent or the important?
How do I juggle these two with grace?

With only three more days with kids this school year, I feel the crush of the urgent.

This weekend I got to enjoy a little bit of the important--a picnic with some of my students and their families.  And this evening I just took a  mini-hike with Sam, who said, "Miriam, we will just walk until you are too tired."  {That kid just cracks me up!}

I think it's so easy for the urgent to win out every time, but dear brave heart, fight for the important.
