Less Fear

I totally love thinking about what life with less fear looks like.  {It's pretty amazing!}  It takes so much courage to be brave!  But then it offers freedom and hope and depth and real relationships.  Courage allows us to take off our masks and be who we are meant to be.  We get to share our unique and beautiful gifts with the world.  We get to give and receive love in abundance.  Who doesn't want that?!

What does your life look like when you dream about acting from love and not fear?  What are the little mini steps you can take today to start moving in that direction?

I think courage is a muscle--the more we use it the stronger it gets!  Good luck with your Less Fear Workout!  Let us know how it's going!

Perspective

How many times have you heard this?  It's all about perspective.  It's so easy to forget this in the moment, but think about what worried you 5 years ago or last year or last month or even yesterday.  Most of it doesn't matter now even if we can remember it.

We can't see ahead, but we can know that most of what bothers us and overwhelms us will not matter a year from now.  {Even thought I worry more than I need to, I take comfort in this thought.}  There is nothing like a walk in nature to help us recognize that life keeps moving forward at a pace and rhythm we do not control.  This is one of the things I love about spring.  Here in Ohio when I've just about given up on the thing, the sun shines warmer, the grass turns greener, and the daffodils spread cheer around.

As the school year winds down and brave teachers everywhere feel the year end press, remember it's all about perspective.  I hope you find a bit of comfort in that thought, and get yourself outside for nature's reality check.  It's good for your mind, body, and spirit.

Serendipity:  When Worlds Collide

I totally love it when unexpected things or long hoped for things work out in amazing ways!  I've been experiencing this since I was a teenager.  I would run after something, and then voila, in some unexpected way it would be available to me.

This is how I spent two summers in high school in Alaska.  This is how I got my favorite job EVER--Americorps volunteer.  This is how I made off debt that exceeded one year's income in just two years.  And the list could go on and on.  It isn't always easy, but it's always AMAZING.

When things work out in unexpectedly beneficial ways, some people call this serendipity.  This photo is a lovely bit of serendipity.  I went outside the coffee shop and gallery where some of my art was showing, and I wanted to photograph in the window.  It was such a bright sunshiny day that the reflection of the building where my new art studio is located appears at the same time.  I can't even believe I'm saying that my art is in a gallery show and I have studio space in an art center!!!  It's a total dose of serendipity!

Have you been experiencing any serendipity?  or blessing?  or universe conspiring?  I hope so!

Deep Roots

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost."

― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

This is one of my newest paintings.  The title is Deep Roots.  It makes me think about how often I think I know about what is going on when I see the surface, but I don't know where the roots might be going--if they are deep or shallow.

It's so easy to make snap judgements.

It also makes me think lots about where do I go to be nourished and how deep are my roots?

And that right there is the question for all of us to write or think about today--where and how are you nourished?  And how deep are your roots?  Can they sustain you in the storm?

I would love to read your thoughts on the topic.

Sacred Space

As the school year starts to wind down it becomes more and more important to practice self care.   It is not for the weak.  It is for the wise.  I am feeling really crabby and prickly today.  I know I need to practice self care.  I took myself out to breakfast, and I'm working on plans for my future.  For me that is part of self care.  So is sharing this blog with you.

In January I took myself on a little private retreat at True Nature in Millersburg, Ohio.  One of the things that came out for me in a little finger painting activity is the need for sacred space in my life.  In order to create and be and nourish other people I must leave some sacred space.

What is sacred space?  I think it is a place where we nourish the most sacred and true part of ourselves--our light.  The world is always pressing in on our sacred space.  When we cease to be vigilant it can totally disappear, and in a sense it takes the most amazing part of us with it.

Please take good care of yourself.  Don't let the urgent trump the important anymore than is absolutely essential.  You will slide into summer in a more beautiful space (and maybe not quite as exhausted!) if you honor your sacred space now.
